DYB × Callipia: A Brush with Korean Culture

A calligraphy fan-making experience bringing teachers together through creativity and a shared team

DYB × Callipia: A Brush with Korean Culture

On October 24, Callipia Studio partnered with DYB Education to host a calligraphy fan-making experience for DYB’s native English-speaking teachers. Designed as a team challenge, the activity offered participants an opportunity to explore Korean lettering and art while spending time with their colleagues.

As one of the stations along the event route, Callipia Studio welcomed teams to explore a selection of Korean and English lettering examples and bring their chosen words to life on folding fans. With guidance and demonstrations in English, participants learned how to use the brush and tried their hand at both familiar letterforms and Hangeul, the Korean alphabet.

Around the tables, moments of concentration were mixed with opportunities to share and admire one another’s work. Korean words such as “Arirang” and “Sallang-sallang,” an expression evoking gentle movement, took on a different character in every hand. Participants discovered how each brush movement shaped the lines as they gradually filled their fans with their own lettering.

The experience focused on participation and the satisfaction of finishing a piece, rather than perfect lettering. A shared team challenge became a collection of individual creations, with each finished fan serving as a personal keepsake of a day spent exploring Korean culture.

Our warm thanks go to Emma and Jean at DYB Education for their support in coordinating this event, to the wider DYB team, and to all the teachers who participated with such enthusiasm. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our guest instructors, 황호찬 and 이정애, for their warm and thoughtful guidance throughout the experience. Through Korean and Western calligraphy, Callipia looks forward to creating more opportunities for people to enjoy handwriting, connect with one another, and discover different cultures.
